The pedestal of Ganesh Lal Choudhury College was founded and initiated with a healthy donation of Rs. 10,00,000/- (Rs. Ten Lakh) Only by the Scholastic-minded Late Mohan Lal Choudhury in order to immortalise the name of his elder brother Late Ganesh Lal Choudhury and to spread the light of Higher Education through Barpeta Road Town and its neighbouring areas. The foundation stone of the college was laid on 16th March, 1990 by the Honourable Ashok Kumar Saikia, the then Education Commissioner of Assam and it heralded a new name in the educational Scenario of Assam.

In the year 1990 Degree Courses were introduced in G. L. Choudhury College under Gauhati University. The Pass Course of English under Gauhati University was introduced in 1990 and the Major Course was introduced in the academic session 2001-02.

The Department got BA1st Year permission from GU on 24-04-1991and BA 2nd year permission on 13-08-1994. The Department got BA part 1 concurrence 0n 03-04-1995.The Department had the opportunity to get TDC part 1 Affiliation on 04-01-1997, TDC part-II Affiliation on 24-10-1998, part II Affiliation on03-03-2000 and permanent Affiliation on 31-08-2009 from GU. Accordingly, it got Major permission on 28-02-2003, TDC part-I Govt.
